Hundreds of education and mentoring programs are available for traders wanting to learn more about trading the forex market profitably. In my experience, most of these courses contain good content for beginners by detailing basic technical analysis, fundamental strategies with accompanying online lectures and webinars. Generally speaking, I find the information to be sound; however I am sceptical about two things.
Expensive education courses with high up-front costs
Custom indicators that promise to show the market in a secret, more profitable light. Remember that every forex indicator is calculating and displaying information based on a very limited number of variables. Namely open price, close price, high and low of the selected time frame.
How many ways can this information really be interpreted? I have found custom indicators are generally just a minor variation of a standard indicator (Stochastic, MACD, CCI, RSI) with a new sexy name to help it sound exotic.
Of the hundreds of education and mentoring courses available promising to make you rich or teach you the skills needed to be a professional trader I have only researched a handful, I offer my experience with each of these courses below.
Your Trading Room is an Australian based operation that offers comprehensive education, custom indicators (red flag!) and a 24hr/5.5 day trading room.
I loved the trading room. It was actually part of my inspiration for starting this site, all the members interact with each other and the moderator assists with questions and trading calls. Your Trading Room offer a free 1 week trial so guests can sample the trading room.
The reason I chose not to subscribe to their service was the upfront cost of $5k. The content and education was ok, but I was only really interested in the trading room. They won't let you subscribe to the trading room (an additional cost of $199 per month) unless you sign up for the full program.
I've since found two former members that had been generally dissatisfied with the level of support they received and found it frustrating that the moderators continually changed strategies.
The sales people also push fairly hard and pressure you to sign you up over the phone, which really turned me off considering they are clearly not traders. One person that I spoke to didn't even know what fundamental analysis was!
The bottom line - I think you will make money using Your Trading Room, however I think there are better alternatives to chose from.
I learned a lot about basic technical analysis when I first started trading from these guys. The information is good, it's easy to follow and it's FREE. It is set up as a bit of an online community, with a forex school attached. It's good, you should definitely look at it if you're a total newbie.
The content, information and analysis at Daily FX is amazing. It's free if you open a live account at FXCM, or they offer a 1 week free trial. There are Forex Signals, online webinars, a live trading room, fundamental analysts reports, online forums. It's almost overwhelming. The only thing lacking is the ability to be mentored, which many of the other expensive educators provide. There is content and information for everyone from the newbie to the expert trader. For a free service, I can't recommend it enough.
Trading-strategies.info is run and moderated by Phil Newton, an experienced and professional forex trader that has an impressive history trading a raft of different financial instruments. Phil Newton's approach is different from all other education courses I've seen. He frankly doesn't care if you sign up or not. He is a professional trader that is house bound due to an illness and has developed the site to connect with, and educate traders around the world. I believe this is primary motivation for setting up the site - instead of being motivated simply to sell you his product.
He develops his own strategies based on swing trading and scalper methodology. He also regularly tweaks the strategy to adapt to changing market conditions.
The site isn't well put constructed and can be difficult to navigate, however the content is available if you put in a bit of work to find it and Phil Newton is an excellent educator.
There are no upfront costs or fancy indicators involved, just the monthly fee that gives you access to the educational videos and the live trading room.
The live trading room operates during the UK hours with a 2 hour break around lunch time.
If you're looking for a moderator to give you trade calls - this isn't it. Phil won't help you unless you have done the work by going through his educational videos. Even then, he won't always tell you when he's trading. He's is in the trading room for you to ask questions and discuss the market, but he won't give you the answer easily. He encourages you to work it out for yourself, which can be frustrating for many people wanting the quick fix.
I found his strategies sound, however they require a lot of manual work in placing orders and monitoring the trades. It's also the type of strategy that you really need to sit and watch the market for most of the UK market hours, the success of a month of trading can depend on being present for 1 big move. If you miss it then you may miss out on being profitable for the month. This style of trading wasn't convenient for me so I no longer subscribe to his service, however I do recommend it and definitely learned aspects of forex trading that I hadn't previously been aware of.
